An Exercise in Detail

I found this great video that I used with my students to help their descriptive writing and to add detail and I thought I would share it with you.

A little background of what it is: David Michalek created a “portrait in time” video that is a very, very small moment in time (in total about 11 seconds) slowed to glacial time. The actions in themselves seem really basic and simple, but when slowed down you see a lot more of the details going on, allowing you to practice descriptive writing but also descriptive thinking–how many other actions have these things going on?

As for the exercise, I would challenge you to set a word goal for each minute (between 100-500 words) which could result in a pretty decent scene.

Here’s a link to the video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eob7V_WtAVg.
